Experts have revealed a surprising household item that can be purchased at Aldi for £2 as the key to helping with icy driveways.

The UK is currently experiencing sub-zero temperatures, along with snow and ice, which is causing "perilous" driving conditions.

This includes icy driveways and frozen windscreens, which can make driving things challenging for Brits on their commute to work or school drop-off.

A household item that can be bought for £2 in supermarkets has been revealed as a key weapon in the war against icy driveways this winter.

While councils do their best to grit main roads, many drivers across the UK are still left dealing with the icy patches outside their homes.

How to drive safely in snow and ice

£2 Aldi hack to help deal with icy driveways

While you could go out and buy your own salt and grit, which can be costly and isn't usually readily available, the experts at Select Car Leasing have revealed a more budget-friendly way to remove the snow and ice from your driveway - cat litter.

Managing director of Select Car Leasing, Graham Conway, explains: "When scattered over an icy driveway, non-clumping clay cat litter provides instant traction underfoot and under tyres, reducing the risk of slips and skids.

“Unlike rock salt, which works by melting ice, cat litter acts like tiny grit granules that give grip even in the coldest temperatures.”

A 10-litre bag costs £2.18 in Aldi, while Tesco shoppers can find it on the shelves for just a penny more at £2.19.

Mr Conway added: "Better still, for households with pets it’s something you may already have in a cupboard at home."

More expert tips to help make winter driving safer

Cat litter isn’t the only home-based hack that can make winter driving safer and less stressful, according to Select Lease Car.

Mr Conway said: “Driving in winter can be tough, especially when the mercury plummets.

“There are plenty of products on the market to address some of the problems the conditions can cause, but there are also a few money-friendly hacks that do a decent job."

De-ice windscreen with homemade spray

The motoring experts recommended making your own mix in a spray bottle to help de-ice your windscreen, consisting of three parts white vinegar.

When ready, spray on your windscreen and cover overnight to prevent ice forming.

The experts said: "It won’t completely replace scraping, but it can dramatically reduce build-up."

Plastic bags over wing mirrors

Placing sandwich bags or small bin liners over your wing mirrors is also a way of keeping them ice-free, according to Select Car Leasing.

Keep a spare doormat in your boot

If your wheels start spinning on an icy drive, slide an old doormat or a carpet offcut under the tyres.

"This will give you the extra traction to get moving," Select Car Leasing added.
