The leader of the Conservative group on the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames council has been suspended following serious allegations of assault.

Rowena Bass,  who was also the party's former parliamentary candidate for Bootle, is alleged to have assaulted her election agent following a verbal confrontation, according to reports from LBC.

The agent reportedly sustained bruising to her face after the incident, which is said to have occurred at the Conservative office on Upper Richmond Road in East Sheen.

In a statement, a Conservative Party spokesman said: "Cllr Rowana Bass has been suspended from the Conservative Party pending investigation into these allegations. This process is rightly confidential and we will not be commenting further."

An email from the Richmond Park & North Kingston Conservative Association confirmed the matter has been reported to the police and remains under investigation.

The Association also reminded members of its "zero-tolerance policy towards abuse, intimidation or threatening behaviour directed at staff or volunteers."

Councillor Bass has represented Coombe Hill ward since 2014.

She stood as the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Bootle, finishing fourth with 4.3 per cent of the vote.

Cllr Bass has been contacted for comment.
