Three people were taken to hospital after a serious collision on a major road east of London this morning.

The crash took place on the A127 Southend Arterial Road near Great Warley at around 7.35am today (July 6), and involved a lorry and a car.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "One patient was transported to The Royal London Hospital for further treatment, while another two patients were taken to Basildon University Hospital."

The incident caused severe delays for London-bound commuters, with the westbound carriageway blocked from the A128 at Tilbury Road to Little Warley Hall Lane.

Traffic queues stretched back as far as Dunton Wayletts.

There were also delays on the M25 between junction 28 (Brentwood and Brooke Street roundabout) and junction 29 (Romford and Basildon).

An earlier vehicle breakdown contributed to the morning congestion.

Queuing traffic was reported to be three miles long north of the crash site at Little Warley earlier this morning.

All lanes were reopened later in the morning, but residual delays continued for some time.

An Essex Police spokesperson said earlier: “We received reports of a collision involving a lorry and a car at the junction of the A127 and A128 at about 7.40am on Monday 6 July.

“Our officers remain at the scene with other emergency service colleagues.”
