A teenager died during a Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award expedition after getting into difficulty in a river.
The inquest into the death of Umar Dumbuya, 18, has now been opened in Pontypridd.
Mr Dumbuya was a student at Leyton Sixth Form College and had travelled more than 170 miles as part of the DofE scheme when the incident occurred on June 30.
The 18-year-old had entered the River Wye and had gotten into difficulty in the water during the trip at Glasbury, Powys.
He "became submerged by the current and failed to resurface", the hearing was told.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident, with Mountain Rescue and the National Police Air Service among those in attendance.
Mr Dumbuya was later identified by one of his teachers.
Coroner Kerrie Burge said: "I am satisfied it is necessary to open an inquest into the death of Mr Dumbuya, because the circumstances suggest his death is unnatural."
The inquest has been adjourned until a date yet to be fixed.
Mr Dumbuya's family have remembered him as a 'loving boy' who enjoyed basketball, gym sessions, and time with friends and family.
