Camden Council has launched a six-week consultation on whether to make the pedestrianisation of part of Camden High Street permanent and possibly extend the scheme.
The traffic-free zone, first introduced as a trial in May 2025, runs from the junction with Parkway and Kentish Town Road to Jamestown Road and Hawley Crescent, just outside Camden Town Underground station.

Cllr James Slater, cabinet member for planning and a sustainable Camden, said: "Camden Town is an important shopping and transport hub for local residents as well and being an internationally recognised destination that draws people in from across London, the rest of the UK, and the world.
"The trial has made the area safer and more pleasant for pedestrians and reduced air pollution on the street. The extra space has also allowed us to hold events and activities that showcase the best of Camden’s culture and communities."
During the trial period, feedback and monitoring data have been collected to assess the scheme’s impact. Feedback from the council’s Commonplace page has indicated strong public support.
More than 70 per cent of respondents in a 2024 consultation backed the pedestrianisation.
Mr Slater continued: "The comprehensive and detailed feedback that we have received from residents, businesses and visitors, along with our monitoring, has helped us to better understand what people feel about the trial and therefore we are consulting on making the trial permanent and also on a potential extension to the traffic free area."
The council is also considering expanding the pedestrian zone across Camden Lock Bridge up to Castlehaven Road.
Mr Slater added: "This could include a range of improvements for people walking, wheeling and cycling, as well as more public space and outdoor seating for local businesses. The consultation will run for six weeks from Monday, July 13 to Sunday, August 23 and I urge all residents, businesses and visitors to respond."
The trial scheme supports Camden’s plans to develop a Low Emission Neighbourhood in Camden Town, supported by £5 million in TfL Borough Safer Streets funding.
Camden will decide whether to make the scheme permanent based on feedback from the consultation, monitoring data, and council policy. If approved, further consultation on the extended area would take place in 2027.
People can also share ideas for other improvements through a separate Camden Town Vision consultation currently underway.
