A south London fish and chip shop has been earmarked for a prestigious national award.

Fish! Kitchen, based in Borough Market, has been named among the UK's top 40 contenders in the National Fish & Chip Awards 2027 and is now in the running for the coveted Takeaway of the Year title.

The South London business was selected from entries across the UK after impressing judges with its food quality, customer service, industry knowledge and commitment to sustainable practices.

The business is of three London-based takeaways to make the longlist, alongside Chipping Wharf Fish & Chips in Bow and Skipjacks in Harrow.

Speaking on the news, the founders said: "The fact that we are in the National Fish & Chip Awards Takeaway of the Year Top 40 is fantastic, it has definitely given all our staff an incredible buzz.

"As a team, we have been working together for quite a long time and are immensely proud of this achievement. We are now hoping that we can go all the way and make it to the finals."

The Takeaway of the Year category is regarded as one of the industry's most prestigious honours and is part of the National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF).

Now in their 39th year, the awards aim to raise standards across the sector and celebrate excellence in the industry.

This year's competition features 14 award categories for national and international businesses, including Restaurant of the Year, Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year and Newcomer of the Year.

A total of 40 fish and chip businesses from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have been longlisted in the Takeaway of the Year category.

The contenders will now undergo further assessments covering food quality, hygiene, environmental sustainability, customer service, operational standards and industry knowledge.

Only 20 businesses will progress to the next stage before the eventual top 10 finalists are revealed later this year.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London on February 24.

Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, said: "As we celebrate the 39th year of the National Fish & Chip Awards, it's brilliant to see talent, passion, excellent professionalism and dedication to their craft on display.

"Every year, the Takeaway of the Year standard continues to rise and this new list of top 40 contenders exemplify that.

"It’s the people behind these businesses that make our industry what it is. We are proud to celebrate the owners, teams and young talent whose passion and hard work keep this much-loved tradition thriving.

"Recognition like this is about far more than trophies – it's about acknowledging the individuals who go above and beyond for their customers and communities every single day."

The current Takeaway of the Year holder is The Scrap Box in York, which won the title at the 2026 awards.
